weight training for girls?? are you nuts?
everyone knows that by combining weight training to our regular fitness program will accelerate weightloss and help strengthen and tone muscles and joints. the main thing to remember is not to over-do with the weights. we start out with light weights and move up from there. always pay attention to your body. if you feel pain or discomfort whilst lifting, it simply means that the weights are too heavy, so lighten the load. and nope, contrary to popular (and ignorant) beliefs, girls will not get hulky bulky when they weight train (whoever gave you that totally stoopid idea??). women are not born with certain hormones that make men bulk up (yes the T thing). so unless a woman is on steroids or any other hormone inducing medication, she *will not* get bulky muscles when she weight trains, capisce?
what weight train will do to a woman is give her strength, stamina and lovely, gorgeous sculpted muscles. ok, i'm crazy for those, if you're not, it's probably wise to stop reading this entry now. i advocate weight training because i've seen what it did to my body. now that i recall, there wasn't a point of time in my life that i didn't combine weight training with cardio activities. but i know of many women who'd spend hours and hours, week after week, in the gym sweating on stationary bikes, the stairmaster, elliptical machines, etc etc and refused to alternate those workouts with weight training for fear of bulking up. don't get me wrong, cardio workouts are indispensible to an effective training program and overall general good health. but any good training program will encourage alternating weight training with cardio workouts.
many years ago when i was at the peak of my "fitness freak" mode, i'd be biking 8km, followed by a 2.4km run, followed by 30 mins on the stairmaster, followed by an hour of hardcore aerobics routine, 3 - 4 times a week for many weeks and didn't see any changes in my body. i brought this up with a trainer at my gym and she recommended that i add weight training to my "regime". she said that my body has hit a "plateau" (i'll explain this later). so i alternated my workouts with weight training, working on different parts of the body, using lighter weights in the beginning and doing 3 sets of 12 -15 repetitions. as i slowly gain strength and didn't "lift till failure" at 15 reps, i'd increase the load. after 4 weeks, i could see/feel noticeable changes in my body. i dropped a few dress sizes, my body was leaner and more toned, i had gotten rid of the excess stubborn "flab" all over my body. i also felt stronger and more energetic. the feeling was nothing short of sensational! even though i've always included weight training in my many years of training as a competitive sportsperson, i only knew the true virtue of it's importance that very day when i saw what it did to my body.
i've not been in a gym for the past 2+ years but that hasn't stopped me from weight training. i've been using free weights with the power90 program and even before that. call me crazy or obsessed, but i can't bear to have flabby arms (you know when you lift your arms to wave and your triceps are still waving even after you've stopped?). it's enough to put me in a frenzy. but thankfully, that hasn't happened to me yet. i'm quite anal when it comes to my arms. now, let's do something about those legs, back, tummy and butt, shall we??
so how about flashing 'em sexy, sculpted muscles anytime soon? seriously, add weight training to your workouts. what do you have to lose?
